Britta Marakatt-Labba’s exhibition Where Each Stitch Breathes / Juohke sákkaldat vuoignjá at Moderna Museet presented approximately sixty works spanning her practice from 1968 to the present. The exhibition brought together embroidery, graphic art, installations, drawings and sculpture, exploring Sámi life and history alongside state oppression and a landscape threatened by exploitation.
Where Each Stitch Breathes
At the centre of the exhibition was Historjá (2003–2007), the monumental 24-metre-long embroidery depicting Sámi history, everyday life, mythology and resistance. The work has been compared to the Bayeux Tapestry and reached a wider international audience through its presentation at documenta 14 in Kassel in 2017. In spring 2025, Historjá was named by ARTnews as one of the most important works of art of the century.
The exhibition also included works from throughout Marakatt-Labba’s career, from early works to recent productions, highlighting her longstanding engagement with Sámi culture, political resistance and environmental issues.
