In the Footsteps of the Stars – The Embroidered Worlds of Britta Marakatt-Labba

Britta Marakatt-Labba’s exhibition In the Footsteps of the Stars – The Embroidered Worlds of Britta Marakatt-Labba was her first major retrospective in Sápmi and Sweden. The exhibition brought together nearly eighty works spanning five decades of her practice, including embroidery, textiles, prints, drawings and sculpture.

In the Footsteps of the Stars

The exhibition presented works from across Marakatt-Labba’s career, from early works to recent productions. Among her best-known works were Garjját / The Crows (1981), Girdi noaiddit / Flying Shamans (1986) and the monumental Historjá (2004–2007).

At 24 metres long, Historjá traces Sámi history through historical events, encounters with nature, mythology and everyday life. Originally commissioned for the University of Tromsø, the work reached an international audience through its presentation at documenta 14 in Kassel in 2017.

The exhibition also included works that had never previously been shown in Sápmi, bringing Marakatt-Labba’s artistic practice back to the region and landscapes that have shaped her work.
