EMMA – Espoo Museum of Modern Art in Helsinki, Finland, acquires "Far inte till havet / Do Not Go to the Sea" (2024)
Do Not Go to the Sea is Britta Marakatt-Labba’s first work created on fine silk fabric. It depicts the hardships caused by rising water levels due to damming. As the water encroaches, people are forced to move higher up on land, but in this portrayal they cannot escape and instead drown in the rising flood. The reindeer are forced to swim to survive. But how far can one flee before there is nowhere left to go? The ground erodes beneath them, and people fall as the land gives way.
The title is inspired by Elin Anna Labba’s book Do Not Go to the Sea from 2024. EMMA – the Espoo Museum of Modern Art – is the largest art museum in Finland and a key cultural destination. Opened in 2006 and located in the WeeGee Exhibition Centre, a former 1960s printing house designed by architect Aarno Ruusuvuori, EMMA combines industrial architecture with expansive exhibition spaces.
The museum presents a dynamic mix of Finnish and international modern and contemporary art, design, and experimental works. Its exhibitions draw from major collections such as the Saastamoinen Foundation and the Tapio Wirkkala Rut Bryk Foundation, alongside a rotating programme of temporary shows. With its large, open galleries and immersive approach, EMMA offers visitors a unique experience that highlights the interaction between art, space, and audience.
